Praying in the Spirit

prayinginthespirit just click on this link and enjoy the message. There are a couple of testimonies from Aboriginal people, it may be hard to hear coz they speak softly! Just turn it up! First Communion is taken and then the message.

After the sermon today, many people responded, either just wanting a touch from God or to be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues. I prayed for two men who did receive the baptism of fire! I praise God for that. They were filled because they were hungry for God, and God responds to hunger. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they SHALL be filled.” (Matt 5:6) The other ladies who were praying for the ladies (in our church, being mainly Aboriginal, men pray for the men, and women pray for the women…you don’t wanna get that wrong!) also had testimonies about women today receiving the baptism, and others nearly there!

Outline of sermon: Praying in the Spirit. 29/03/09

Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the spirit on ALL  occasions with ALL kinds of prayer and requests. With this in mind, be alert and ALWAYS keep on praying for ALL the saints.”

There are many types of prayer, but ALL prayer must be in the spirit. If it is not, it will not be effective, simple as that. It doesn’t matter the occasion, Eph 6 verse 12 says we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces, so we must fight with spiritual weapons. Prayer is a weapon, and must be in the spirit.

Zech 4:6, “‘Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit’, says the Lord of Hosts.”

There are two most effective ways to pray in the spirit. The Word of God (which is the sword of the Spirit) and praying in tongues. The following scripture speaks of both:

Jude 20 says, “building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”

1 Pray the Word!

How do we build ourselves in our most holy faith? Well, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word. So we need to pray the Word, confess the Word and live by the Word. This is the first form of praying in the Holy Spirit.

The Word is the sword of the Spirit, and is most effective in fighting against the enemy. This is the foundation for all prayer in the Spirit, it must be according to God’s Word, if it is not, nothing will happen.

1 John 5:14-15 says that if we pray according to the will of God, He hears us. What is the will of God? It is His Word! If we are praying according to the Word of God, we are praying His will, and we know He hears us, and will answer us.

John 16:13 says that when the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. What is truth? It is God’s Word.

So when we are praying the truth of the Word of God into any situation, then by faith we are praying in the Spirit.

2 Praying in tongues.

1 Cor 14:2: praying in tongues means you are speaking to God, and it is a mystery to everyone else, including the devil. If you pray in tongues, no one else but God will be able to understand you. The devil will not be able to hinder your prayers, you have an audience with God alone, so this is a powerful and effective way of praying in the Spirit.

Now, to show you that according to Jude 20, praying in the Spirit IS praying in tongues, verse 4 of 1 Corinthians tells us anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies (or builds up) himself, and what does it say in Jude 20? BUILDING YOURSELVES UP on your most holy faith, praying in the spirit…or praying in tongues!

While speaking directly to God with no hindrance, you are building your most holy faith in the Spirit, praise God!

In verse 18, Paul says “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all.” If Paul the apostle prayed in tongues, I think we need to as well!

Now yes, the whole of 1 Cor 14 speaks about how IN CHURCH it is better to prophesy than to speak in tongues, but it does not in any way undermine the importance speaking in tongues has in the church. Speaking in tongues is more for your own private prayer time, if anyone is to speak in tongues at church, it should be interpreted, otherise be silent.

So how do we receive this gift? In Acts 19:1-6, Paul laid his hands on them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke in tongues and prophesied. Firstly, you must hunger for more of God and seek God for it. You can have anything the Word says you can have, but you gotta seek God and not give up. Secondly, you need to let people who have this gift pray for you. Go out front after church and let the elders and pastors pray for you, and don’t give up! God wants you to have this special gift, it will build your life in the Spirit and will build your faith!

When you start to speak in tongues, God will give you the gifts of the Spirit, spoke about in 1 Corinthians 12, in greater measure. When the Ephesians were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues, with it came the ability to prophesy!

Do you want more of God? Then seek Him in faith ’till He shows up and moves in your life.

Pray the Word, and pray in tongues…pray in the Spirit on ALL occasions…don’t give up. God bless,

Rob.
