Spiritual Mapping – Joshua 18

“Select three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to explore the land and map it out. They will then return to me with a written report of their proposed divisions of their new homeland.” (Josh 18:4)

In this chapter, there are seven tribes who still haven’t received their portions of land. So Joshua commands three men from each tribe to explore the land and draw a map of it, dividing it into seven sections for each tribe. Then when this was done, Joshua would cast sacred lots to find out from the Lord which portion of land each tribe would receive. So all this was done and the first allotment of land was given to Benjamin. The rest come in the following chapters.

I’ve heard of the principle of spiritual mapping before, but never knew where they got it from, because I never researched it before! I thought about it, however, after reading this chapter, and it makes sense practically. How can the church win the whole world, let alone a large city? The task seems impossible! And that’s true, for Jesus said saving souls is impossible to man, but not with God! So yes, the first answer is we need GOD! But are there practical steps we can take to reach a town, community and city, allowing God to do His work? Jesus said that He will not return until this gospel is preached in all the world- so we must be active in reaching the lost! So what is spiritual mapping? Does it have any relevance? I believe so! Spiritual mapping is simply dividing a city/town/community into sections, and putting leaders in charge of groups for those sections, and going out to those areas and doing some good outreach! This sounds like a good strategy! It does not have to involve door knocking, though you can do that! You can do practical things in your community, bridging the gap between you and your neighbourhood. You may mow their lawns for free, do clothes outreaches, put a free BBQ on for your neighbourhood, put out flyers for your next meeting! Whatever it costs to reach the lost, one person at a time- one neighbourhood at a time- and if everyone does their section, the whole city can be reached until the Great Commission is fulfilled, ushering in the return of our Lord! Something to consider for your church!

“Lord, I pray in the communities You have given us to reach out to, that we’d implement this, so that we can reach our communities for You. I pray for key, biblical strategies to be released through Pastors and leaders, and that Your people would get behind the vision they receive from You. In whatever way You lead us, help us to be obedient to the Great Commission, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
